If a particular address is known within the town, or if we want to know the location of a particular road or street, it is necessary to use a Street Index. A Street Index for the 1891 Census has been compiled. This again has been made clickable, so that if one of the listed road/street names is selected the map of the enumeration district containing the road/street will come to the screen. Only a very abbreviated street index is shown in the Web demonstration, and the links go only to a representative enumeration district map for which only one level of magnification is demonstrated. Of course, some roads/streets -- often the longer ones --might appear in two or more enumeration districts. This complication is catered for by the road/street name appearing more than once in the Street Index, each entry linked to alternative enumeration districts.

In summary, then, you have three ways of accessing the highest level of detail in the maps: (1) via the Whole Town Index Map; or, (2) via the 1891 Census Index Map; or (3) via the Street Index for the 1891 Census. The next screen will let you choose which one you want to use.
