We have worked from these source maps to produce two electronic index maps: (1) a single-screen map of the Borough of Eccles as it was established in 1892 (the Whole-Town Index Map); and, (2) a single-screen map of the enumeration districts used in the 1891 census (the 1891 Census Index Map. Of course, the scale of each of the Index Maps is greatly compressed to fit on the computer screen and only a general view of main features -- railways, rivers, roads, and major buildings -- can be seen on them.

The Index Maps do however allow further exploration of a complete level of detail. They are clickable, enabling them to reveal all the detail of the 1:2500 maps, including particular houses. The ways of using the Index Maps to do this are described below.
